COPPERAS COVE — District Attorney Dusty Boyd released Thursday the name of the police officer involved in a fatal shooting Saturday in the 500 block of Westview Lane.

A news release sent by Boyd’s office stated Cove Patrol Officer Billy Jo Ray III was involved in the shooting death of Kristopher Charles Gagliardi, 24, of Cove.

The Cove Police Department assigned Ray to restricted duty as standard operating procedure after the incident occurred, the release stated. Ray was still on restricted duty as of Thursday afternoon.

Justice of the Peace John Guinn pronounced Gagliardi dead at the scene at 9:50 p.m. Saturday, and a preliminary autopsy report stated Galiardi died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Guinn said according to the preliminary investigation he was given, Ray appeared to be acting in self-defense at the time of the incident.

The Texas Rangers, however, are investigating the incident and the results will be presented to a Coryell County grand jury for review and action.
