Oncor will start replacing electric transformers, utility poles and power lines Monday in a multiple-block area north of U.S. Highway 190.

“The project is an upgrade,” said Carl Green, an area manager for Oncor. “We will be replacing the old poles and upgrading the electric lines, because of the growth and the age and condition and the load.”

Oncor will work for three to five months on several Cove streets to include Veterans Avenue, Main Street and Urbantke Lane, according to a news release from the city.

Other streets include Live Oak, Post Oak, Craig Street and Freedom Lane, Green said.

About 50 poles and transformers will be replaced in the area during the 3- to 5-month period.

The area was targeted for renovations because of the infrastructure’s age, condition and reliability, Green said.

“We look at repeat outages in certain areas, and that is a factor in (replacements) too,” he said. “When it comes to reliability, any kind of new facilities are certainly going to enhance that.”

Oncor conducts similar maintenance projects year round, but this project’s scale is larger because it’s part of a companywide $50 million project, Green said. Figures on the Cove renovations were not provided.

During the project residents, should be aware that Oncor employees will be at or near their properties. Before working on their property, residents should receive a tag from Oncor.

“There may be a times where some of these crews will be in some of these facilities and in someone’s backyard,” Green said.

Oncor plans to handle the upgrades without any power outages for area residents.

“It should not impact any service at all, but there is always potential,” Green said.
