The new Pet Supplies Plus store held a fundraiser for animals in the community Saturday. The animal shelter needs new Astro Turf.

“We want areas for people to meet the dogs which are clean for citizens considering adopting a pet. With all the rain we have had, every area where people can spend time and get to know a dog is muddy,” said Tammy Hall, an Animal Control officer.

When the folks at Pet Supplies Plus learned of the need, they decided to contribute by holding a fundraiser.

“This will be our third charity event since our doors opened. For Valentine’s Day we had a kissing booth,” said Dave Weimert, the assistant manager of the store.

From noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, people could purchase a “pie” made of whip cream for $1. The buyer could then select one of the animal control officers or store employees to receive the pie to the face.

Three small plastic swimming pools with folding chairs sat waiting for those on the receiving end of the pie.

Once a donation was made and the person to receive the pie selected, a garbage bag was placed over the recipient’s clothing and the pie was delivered.

The goal was to raise $400, but the event was an overwhelming success and generated over $600 in funds for the animal shelter.

“We try to work with the community. We have adoption drives each month and we work with local businesses providing coupons, discounts, and other incentives to people adopting a pet. We want to help the community while they help us,” said Tammy Hall.

Pet Supplies Plus is at 1212 E. Business U.S. Highway 190.

The animal shelter is at 1601 N. First St.
