Copperas Cove Police Officer Dexter Ferdinand was named Law Enforcement Officer of the Quarter last week by the Noon Exchange Club.

Pat Thomas, presenting the award, recalled an encounter with Ferdinand.

“I showed him my driver’s license and don’t know why I gave him my concealed handgun license, too. He asked whether I had it in the car, and I said no,” Thomas said, leaving guests to wonder about the rest of his exchange with the officer.

Guest speaker Guy Beveridge, Coryell County constable, explained the role of constables in law enforcement.

“I’ve had a variety of positions prior to serving as constable,” Beveridge said, citing a military assignment he had to protect two hostages, Dayna Curry and Heather Mercer, who were released by the Taliban.

Texas constables are fully empowered peace officers whose primary job is to serve civil and criminal papers, he said.

“The constable is considered the first organized law enforcement in Texas,” Beveridge said.

An auction raised funds for a scholarship fund. Moderated by Inez Fasion, the auction raised $450.

Noon Exchange Club members were preparing for their next project, the Quad City Motorcycle Ride for a Child, on March 23. For more information about the event, go to https://nooner.clubexpress.com or call Mike Blount at (254) 547-6707.
