Two Copperas Cove police officers received the city’s Employee of the Quarter Award on Tuesday for their work in raising funds for another officer’s medical bills.

Officer Krystal Baker and Cpl. Kevin Miller made the selection process easy for the Employee of the Quarter Committee, said Adam Wolf, who chairs the selection group. The votes for the officers were unanimous.

Baker and Miller organized a volleyball match between the fire and police departments to raise funds for Sgt. Kevin Keller, who has been on medical leave for several months and had multiple surgeries, Wolf said.

Several of Keller’s medical bills weren’t covered by his insurance provider, and Baker and Miller wanted to offset some of his medical expenses.

“They decided to work together,” Wolf said. “They put it all together and spent a lot of hours working on this event.”

About 200 attended the match in April. It raised more than $4,000 for Keller’s family.

Miller also was recognized for five years of service to the city.

He started in the police department on Aug. 18, 2008. He was promoted to the police department’s criminal investigation division and now serves as a patrol corporal.

Miller is a member of the police’s honor guard, a hostage negotiator and field training officer.

“He is one of the most courteous officers we have,” City Manager Andrea Gardner said.

Mayor John Hull thanked Miller and Baker, who wasn’t present Tuesday, for their work to other staff members and residents.

“That just goes to show you what kind of employees we have in Copperas Cove,” Hull said.
