Young athletes ages 6-14 have another week to sign up for the Copperas Cove Parks and Recreation summer youth soccer program. The city also has a pee wee league for ages 6 and under.

Registration is open through June 7. The cost is $40 for residents and $45 for non-residents.

Mark Willingham, recreation coordinator, said the summer league has drawn an average of 500 players of all skill levels.

“This is a recreation-based program where we have a lot of first-year players,” he said. “We have ones that have never played before and the ones that have.”

The league’s goal is to get children involved with sports and to bring out community members to enjoy the games together.

“Kids really use this platform to develop socialization skills and help them be able to interact with many different facets,” Willingham said. “More so, the program is to promote health and wellness. It keeps the kids active and outside instead of just sitting in front of the TV.”

Teams were previously co-ed, but for the first time, they will be divided by genders.

“We decide to go this route so we can join with a state association, as most do not have co-ed programs,” Willingham said. “We are trying to realign ourselves so that next year we can be associated with the South Texas Youth Soccer League.”

Soccer is the most popular and least expensive of Cove sports program, he said.

To register, go to www.teamsideline.com/copperascove or the Parks and Recreation Department office, 1408 Golf Course Road, Copperas Cove. For more information, call (254) 542-2719.
