Copperas Cove Independent School District campuses shared a moment of silence Wednesday to remember those who lost their lives during 9/11, but several schools also memorialized the day with other events.

At least two campuses conducted freedom walks to honor those touched by the tragedy.

House Creek Elementary students were visited by its Fort Hood adopt-a-school unit, the 178th Military Police Detachment and the 89th Military Police Headquarters and Headquarters Company. Soldiers from the unit read patriotic books to students in their classrooms.

Second-graders were visited by members of the Copperas Cove Police and Fire departments. Officers and firefighters explained their roles in the community. “I am going out there every day to protect you,” said police officer Joseph Diaz. “No police officer in this world wants to hurt another person. We want to protect you.”
