The Copperas Cove Retired Teachers Association collected more than 600 books to donate to more than 500 kindergarten students throughout Copperas Cove Independent School District last week.

The donations are part of the Texas Retired Teachers Association children’s book project, said Marianna McDonnel, retired librarian.

“It’s part of our statewide support for students even after we are retired,” she said. “We do it every year, and we raise funds, and members bring books to every meeting.”

Deliveries were made throughout the week; House Creek Elementary School students received their books May 9.

“The donations of all these great books are for these students to love books and read for the rest of their lives,” said June Durniak, a retired teacher.

“It’s so rewarding to give these kids books and they are so thrilled to have their own book that they can take home,” said Nancy Turner, a retired teacher.

Roseanne Dietze, House Creek librarian, said this is the first year the school received a donation from the association. “We were excited to be getting all the free books. We are always promoting reading and focus on the comprehension, fluency and word structure.”

Dietze said she hopes the donation will help students continue reading through the summer months. Reading teaches students many things.

“I think they get to understand everyday situations,” she said. “They learn how to deal with and become problem solvers by understanding characters and seeing how they behave in the book.”
