Michele’s Floral and Gifts and Allstate partnered with the School of Wags, a nonprofit organization hosting a multifaceted shoe collection drive through May 20.
The Harker Heights-based School of Wags is dedicated to rescuing and re-homing large breed dogs, particularly mastiffs.
The shoe collection drive will not only raise funds to assist rescued dogs with food, medical and health care needs, but all donated shoes will be sent to Haiti where impoverished people can resell them to earn money for their families.
“We want to benefit more than just dogs,” said Kathryn Liesinger, president and “Dean of Wags.” “We want to also make a worldwide impact. The shoes will stay out of landfills and help people (in Haiti) help themselves. We live in a throw-away society but this drive will benefit the environment and help another country.”
According to Liesinger, approximately 630 million pairs of shoes are thrown away each year. The materials used to manufacture shoes, if left to disintegrate in landfills also creates a health hazard.
“We are delighted and honored to be a part of such an amazing organization that not only helps rescue dogs and third-world countries but our environment as well,” said Michele McGuire, owner of the floral shop. “Its win-win and we always love an opportunity to give back.”
Gently-used shoes of any kind and size, including boots, flip-flops, sneakers and house shoes, will be accepted. The goal is to collect 10,000 pairs of shoes by the May deadline.
