Mason Canales, editor of the Copperas Cove Herald, has been promoted to business editor of the Killeen Daily Herald, leaving room for Wendy Sledd of Fort Hood to take over as the new Cove editor.
Sledd joins the Cove Herald staff with almost 30 years of experience as a reporter, writer, researcher, editor, producer, anchor, and news director for print and electronic media.
She has worked as a press aide on Capitol Hill and for several elected state officials. She has received numerous Associated Press awards and a regional “Edward R. Murrow” award for investigative reporting.
Sledd began working as a correspondent for the Copperas Cove Herald in August, shortly after she and her husband, an active-duty soldier, moved to Fort Hood.
“We are very excited to welcome Sledd to our Cove Herald staff,” said Kristi Parker Johnson, metro editor for the Killeen Daily Herald.
“Her experience, professionalism and enthusiasm should make her a valuable part of the Copperas Cove community.”
Canales served as the Cove Herald editor for two years. “Copperas Cove has treated me well, and I will miss providing residents with news that is happening in their community,” he said. “I can only hope that everyone got as much pleasure reading my articles as I got from working with Cove residents, public officials and its many organizations.” Johnson said Canales did an excellent job gathering and reporting news from the Cove community.
“He will no doubt take that excellence to his new position as business editor at the Killeen Daily Herald,” she said.
