The long wait is finally over for the Star Group-Veterans Helping Veterans building, which now occupies the old Cove police department site.

Star Group joined the Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce on Feb. 27 and celebrated the launch of its new home at 202 S. Fourth St.

More than 90 people attended the opening ceremony, including City Council members, city officials and staff, and a multitude of military veterans.

Jonathan Haywood, president of the organization, unveiled the jersey of Josh Boyce, a Cove native and now a National Football League rookie with the New England Patriots.

Taps was played as the prisoner-of-war and missing-in-action wreath was presented.

“The council has been unbelievable,” said Haywood during the reception at the new Lowe’s Activities Center room. “They’ve helped us so much and it was so amazing how many people helped to make this happen. I want to thank each and every one who donated and helped in any way.”

The new building has a new ceiling, new restrooms and, according to Haywood, volunteers laid new flooring throughout the building.

Haywood said their motto of doing things for others without expecting anything in return came back to the organization.

“It’s great to have these wonderful types of organizations that provide services to residents of the area and region,” said Andrea Gardner, Copperas Cove city manager. “The city is honored and proud to partner with Jonathan and Veterans Helping Veterans. It’s a tremendous asset and shows just how committed the city and residents are to veterans.”
