The $32 million project to build State Highway 9 is nearly completed. The ribbon-cutting date is set for Feb. 20.

The highway is 3.14 miles long, said Ken Roberts, public information officer for the Waco Division of the Texas Department of Transportation

“The cosmetic work is taking place right now. We are just doing the striping and putting in the ridge rails,” he said.

With an estimated completion date of the end of summer 2013, the project is about six months behind schedule. But it is coming in under budget by about $7,000, Roberts said.

“A few things slowed us down. We had to move a lot of dirt and the rock surfaces were a little more difficult to deal with than we had anticipated,” Roberts said. “The facility was built on a new location, which means there was not a roadway there before. It will be part of a newly designated highway across Fort Hood, which also took additional time to comply with federal guidelines.”

The highway was a cooperative effort between Fort Hood, the city of Copperas Cove and Coryell county.

City spokesman Kevin Keller said the opening of the new roadway should give an economic boost to the community.

“We look forward to easing the traffic congestion on Highway 190, allowing for easier access to local businesses, especially during peak times,” he said.
