Shoppers can take advantage of the annual sales tax holiday this weekend at their favorite neighborhood stores in Copperas Cove.

From Friday to Sunday, retailers across Texas are exempt from charging state and local sales tax on certain items under $100, according to the 2013 tax-free guidelines.

It also applies to qualifying merchandise placed on layaway or rain check.

BJ Callaway, owner of Sporty B, said the tax holiday is helpful for shoppers purchasing the custom spirit and fan wear and accessories sold at her store.

“Some of my custom jerseys and things like that can get expensive so the tax-free weekend, plus our regular sales, is really nice for our customers,” she said.

C & C Sporting Goods regularly takes part in the tax-savings event, said Mitch Lofton, store manager.

“We sell sporting goods and other kinds of merchandise, but primarily it’s team-related merchandise including some familiar brands,” he said. “We follow the guidelines by the list in terms of what is exempt and what applies.”

Some retailers have extended their sales beyond the state tax rate of 8.25 percent, offering customers even greater discounts.

Violet, a women’s apparel store, is offering 20 percent off each store item including clearance items, said store supervisor Jennifer Hartley. “We always do have some kind of sale going on in our store and tax-free weekend is one of them.” The store’s merchandise, Hartley said, consists of fashion clothes and jewelry for women of many ages.

Babies and Things owner Tasha Roberts said this week marks the store’s biggest sale of the year.

Not only do they honor tax-free shopping but they also hold a food drive. This year the proceeds will go to the Cove House Emergency Homeless Shelter.

“We give everybody 10 percent off, but if customers bring in three or more canned goods, they’ll get 15 percent off of the total purchase instead,” Roberts said. “Military will get an additional 10 percent off of the already discounted price.”

The resale store’s tax-free weekend sale runs in conjunction with its back to school sale on backpacks and school clothes up to children’s size 10, Roberts said.
