COPPERAS COVE — Police arrested a Copperas Cove man suspected of stealing coaxial cable from a work truck Thursday.

Justice of the Peace Bill Price arraigned Rickey Bill Mayer, 47, Friday on a charge of theft of precious metals — a state jail felony. Price set Mayer’s bond at $10,000.

According to the arrest complaint, a witness reported Dec. 18 to police that she saw Mayer allegedly walk up to a work truck and pull a spool of wire out of the bed of the vehicle.

He then allegedly walked behind a local convenience store and left the scene on a bicycle, according to the witness. She also identified Mayer.

At the scene, police searched the area for the missing spool and talked to the truck driver. The wire was not found.

The victim of the theft said the wire was coaxial cable that costs about $300 a spool, the complaint stated. Police also determined the wire was about 60 percent copper.

Sometime later, police met with Mayer at his home. After an initial denial, he eventually confessed to stashing the wire in a black Dodge pickup and told police he had plans to strip out the copper and sell it, the complaint stated.

In an unrelated case, Price also arraigned Emmanuel Miguel Key, 21, of Copperas Cove, Friday on a charge of family violence assault by impeding breath or circulation. Price set his bond at $5,000.
