Copperas Cove Independent School District officials anticipate the construction of a new S.C. Lee Junior High workout room to be finished by the end of the summer.

“The plan is to have it completed before school is open for next year,” said Deputy Superintendent Richard Kirkpatrick.

The district has yet to meet with Salado-based Sandor Construction to determine a start date for the $240,000 facility, Kirkpatrick said. It approved the contractor last week.

The building’s preliminary design calls for 4,000 square feet of floor space, which is more than double the current facility. A 4-foot overhang for roof and ridge vents will create ample shade around the facility. The vents can be opened and closed to draw outside air into the building and give hot air an escape route.

Although the structure will be mostly made of metal, the architecture firm, EVstudios, paid close attention to the building’s thermal dynamics because it will not be insulated. Two heaters also are planned for the building.

Kirkpatrick said S.C. Lee has needed a new facility for several years.

“The weight room we have right now is so undersized,” said Kayleen Love, S.C. Lee principal, in a February meeting. “With this wide open space, everyone will benefit, and it will be safer.”

Increasing the space will allow more students to use the facility at once and provide better supervision, Kirkpatrick said.

Junior high is when students need to start learning how to properly train with weights, so they create better habits for when they really start strength-building workouts, Kirkpatrick said. It also promotes healthy living for the rest of their lives.

“That is the time you have to get them going on it, that is the time to train them how to lift,” Kirkpatrick said. “It is a life activity.”
