Doreen Vasseur, 51, has worked for six years as the family center director of the Armed Services YMCA in Copperas Cove. She is a 19-year resident of Cove.

Where are you from?

Quincy, Mass.

What brought you to Cove?

The military; my husband joined the Army.

What do you enjoy most about living and working in Cove?

I love the small time atmosphere. Everybody knows each other, everybody’s friendly. I love that everybody is willing to give each other a hand and help each other out.

How did you come to work for the YMCA?

I worked for the school district and I was on the board of the YMCA’s Boys & Girls Club. They told me there was a job opening, and one of the members of the board said, “Doreen, I want you to apply for this job.” So I applied for it.

What do you enjoy most about working with kids?

I like seeing them grow, seeing them change. I was in in-house detention so I worked with the kids who needed a little extra TLC, and seeing them mature in front of my eyes and become better people was my biggest thing. Seeing the looks on their faces after they achieved something got me all excited.

What or who is an inspiration to you?

God is my inspiration. I leave everything up to him. He’s the one who got me the job here. I’m very involved in my church, and my religious background is how I live my life.

Are you involved in any community activities, organizations or clubs?

I’m the youth director at Grace United Methodist Church in Cove; we go on mission trips every year. I’m also an ambassador on the (Cove) Chamber of Commerce and I was a part of the (Cove) Optimist Club.

Tell me about your family.

I’ve been married 27 years and my husband, Allan, is the owner of Black Meg. I have two daughters — they’re my pride and joy. Erin Johnson is a full-time teacher in Killeen. Cortney Vasseur lives in Conroe and she’s engaged. She just graduated with honors from Sam Houston State University. And I have one awesome grandbaby, Nolan.

What is your favorite vacation?

Of course Massachusetts because I get to see my family. I go home every summer.

What was the best advice you were given?

My mother, she’s my inspiration, too. She’s an amazing woman, and she said you get more with honey than you do with vinegar. So always be nice to people and people will be nice to you. That’s got me through 51 years.

If you could change one thing about your life, what would that be and why?

I love my life, but I probably would bring all of my family here from Massachusetts so I wouldn’t be so far away from them. I hate being so far from my mother and my sisters.
