A pair of Bulldawgs football players made their collegiate decisions official Wednesday.

During a National Signing Day ceremony, seniors Floyd Connell and Kaleb Honts secured their athletic futures by committing to play for Louisiana-Monroe and McMurry, respectively.

Connell was named the 8-6A All-District Offensive Player of the Year as a senior after catching 20 passes for 912 yards and nine touchdowns. Additionally, he was placed on the all-district second team as a cornerback.

Honts finished with 20 receptions for 213 yards and two touchdowns in 2017.

Collectively, the duo helped the Bulldawgs return to the playoffs for the 17th time in 18 years after failing to qualify in 2016.

“This is the culmination of years of hard work,” Copperas Cove head football coach and athletic director Jack Welch said. “So, whenever a kid gets the opportunity to move on and further their careers, it just gives you a warm feeling inside.

Girls Basketball

The Lady Bulldawgs capped off their regular season schedule with a 51-48 victory at Killeen, eliminating the Lady Kangaroos from playoff contention.

Copperas Cove, however, is set to return to the playoffs after capturing the district’s third seed with a 10-4 record.

The Lady Bulldawgs (21-8) will open the postseason Tuesday evening against No. 14 DeSoto.

The bi-district game will tipoff at 6 p.m. and will be played at Waco’s McLennan Community College.

Copperas Cove takes a three-game winning streak into the playoffs, defeating Shoemaker (65-50) and Harker Heights (53-47) prior to beating Killeen.

Boys Basketball

The Bulldawgs suffered another disappointing defeat Tuesday, extending the losing streak to 11 consecutive games.

After narrowly falling to Harker Heights 52-50 last Friday, Killeen earned a two-point victory, 61-59, at Copperas Cove on Tuesday.

The Bulldawgs opened the season by winning 22 of their first 23 games, but during their skid, five games were decided by two points, while there were also a pair of three-point losses, an overtime loss and a double-overtime loss.

Copperas Cove (22-12) closes its home schedule tonight, hosting Belton at 7 p.m. before traveling to face No. 23 Waco Midway in the season finale.

Soccer

The Lady Bulldawgs collected a district victory Tuesday, defeating Shoemaker 2-0.

The Lady Grey Wolves allowed an own-goal off a pass from Copperas Cove’s Nicole Evans before teammate Adora Lumpkin recorded the match’s final goal off an assist from Mariah Ruiz.

Despite goals from Kaleb Honts and Ray Berros, the Bulldawgs lost to Shoemaker 3-2 at home. With the defeat, the Bulldawgs fall to 0-4-1 in district.

Copperas Cove plays against Harker Heights with the Bulldawgs serving as hosts in the contest, while the Lady Bulldawgs travel for the match.
