The Copperas Cove Lady Dawgs are going to the playoffs.
Not that there was much doubt. The Lady Dawgs ran their winning streak to 17 straight matches and are 10-0 in District 8-5A after defeating Temple 25-16, 25-15, 25-7 on Tuesday in Temple.
Qiana Canete had 12 kills, 10 digs and three blocks to lead Copperas Cove (31-6) and Ariella Garcia added 26 assists, nine kills, eight digs and an ace.
Cove coach Cari Lowery would have liked to see her team be even more dominant in the first two sets, though.
“We can’t just play well enough to beat the team we’re playing at the time,” said Copperas Cove coach Cari Lowery. “What we need is to do the things it takes to get better later. We need more consistency.”
Cove showed it in the final set. The Lady Dawgs scored 11 straight to take full command, with a pair of kills each from Canete and Brittney Johnson. Cove finished the match by scoring the last eight points, punctuated by a Carlie Tuiasosopo blast from a Mikayla Blount set.
Defensively, Cove was led by Johnson, who had 12 digs and an ace. Jessica Vick and Blount, who also had 13 assists, each had nine digs.
“In Game 3, I was pleased with our movement and our speed,” said Lowery, whose team faces Waco Midway on Friday. “We had pieces of brilliance in the first two sets.”
Temple (10-26, 3-7) was led by Amanda Goodman with 15 digs and eight kills. C.J. Anderson added 23 digs and Ismay Lee had 10 for the Tem-Cats.
