Copperas Cove Vs. Cedar Hill_volleyball

Copperas Cove's Christina Pettigrew (18) celebrates with her teammates on Tuesday night after winning a point against Cedar Hill during a Class 6A first-round playoff game in West.

Copperas Cove High School was knocked out of the volleyball playoffs in the Class 6A area round Nov. 3 as Southlake Carroll took all three sets, 25-21, 25-13, and 25-21.

Southlake, ranked No. 5 in Texas on, entered Friday’s match with a 38-7 record. The Lady Dragons were 11-5 in their district. Cove was 38-8 and 12-0 in 8-6A.

The Lady Dawgs cut the Lady Dragons’ lead in half four times throughout the first set before coming within four points of Carroll. Cove’s defensive blocks kept the Lady Dragons lead at bay but Carroll started to take notice of the Lady Dawgs undefended areas on the court before taking the set 25-21.

At the beginning of the second set, Cove got on the board first and started to build momentum before Carroll came back to take the lead. The Lady Dawgs tied the set three times early on before the Lady Dragons started to take advantage and capitalize on the holes on the Lady Dawgs side of the floor before taking the set 25-13.

The third set of the game started with Cove getting on the board first again before a couple of miscommunication errors allowed the Lady Dragons to catch up before taking the lead once more. The Lady Dawgs tied the score twice before calling their first timeout.

The Cove crowd rallied behind their team when they made exciting defensive saves or kills throughout the game. At this timeout, they came back roaring with chants of “Let’s go, Cove!” in response to the Lady Dragons’ fans chanting as they led 15-12.

Late into the third set Cove came back with five unanswered points with blocks from Jada Close and a kill from Kamryn Ash and Leah Powell, forcing Carroll to call a timeout leading 23-21.

The Lady Dragons came out of the break with two unanswered points to take the set 25-21.

The loss was Cove’s first since falling in three sets to Denton Ryan at the Leander Volleypalooza tournament Aug. 26.
