The wind blew cold and Cory Scott was in a hot-air duel with Ellison’s Malik Hawkins and Ojai Black.

The jokes went back and forth.

The Eagles made it further in the playoffs than Scott’s Copperas Cove Bulldawgs.

Scott was the District 8-5A Offensive MVP.

The Eagles had won the 8-5A championship. And, in their 19th straight postseason appearance, they reached the second round.

Cove squeezed its way into the playoffs on the final day of the regular season and lost to top-ranked DeSoto in a first-round game that was much closer than the final 72-56 score indicated.

Ellison was a favorite all along, though. The Bulldawgs were a bubble team, at best.

The Bulldawgs and Lady Dawgs, both.

The Copperas Cove basketball teams didn’t win district championships. But, in their senior seasons, Scott and Shawnte’ Goff, both first-team selections on the 2013 Killeen Daily Herald All-Area basketball team, led the Dawgs and Lady Dawgs to the basketball playoffs, where no Cove basketball team has been in three years.

Goff led the Lady Dawgs in points (14.4), assists (3.8) and steals (3.1), while also averaging 5.5 rebounds per game. The District 8-5A co-Offensive Player of the Year also led the Cove girls to their first playoff appearance since 2010.

Scott, a Stephen F. Austin signee, averaged 24.3 points per game and led the Cove boys basketball team to its first playoff appearance since 2008.

And before anyone knew it, Scott was sitting on top of a basketball rim, where he could no longer hear the words of his Ellison counterparts.
