After returning to the playoffs last season for the first time since 2008, Copperas Cove appears poised to make a repeat trip.

The Lady Bulldawgs opened District 8-5A play Tuesday at Killeen, where they defeated the Lady Kangaroos 25-1, earning the run-rule victory in five innings.

It was the first district game for first-year head coach Bryan Waller, who inherits the program from Shelly Hayes. She spent one season at the helm, finishing her tenure with an 18-17 overall record and going 8-6 in district to finish fourth in the final standings.

Under Hayes, pitcher Carlee Duran flourished, making the all-district second team as a sophomore, and looks to be on pace for another standout season. She pitched the complete game, striking out seven Killeen batters.

Offensively, Copperas Cove scored 10 runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Senior Elliana Doubleday led the Lady Bulldawgs, posting two hits, three runs scored and seven RBIs, while teammates Tayler Hammack and Destiny Henderson also accounted for a pair of hits apiece.

Copperas Cove opens play at the Taylor tournament today before resuming its district schedule Tuesday at home against Shoemaker.
