James Norris and Robert Bigford have big plans on March 29-30. They’ll be in San Antonio competing for the Texas State Bowling Championship.

The duo earned their invitations to the state meet by virtue of their March 2 performances at the Centex Region 5 Championships. Norris finished fourth and Bigford fifth.

“Moving forward, I expect to bowl better at state than regionals,” Norris said. “That’s mainly because there is better competition. If I bowled the same at state as I did at regionals (213 average), I’d be happy. But that score won’t do as well. So I need to stay calm and relaxed through the qualifying round and make it to match play.”

Of the 65 bowlers who qualified for San Antonio as individuals, only 16 advance to match play.

“Honestly, if I finish in the top eight, I’ll be content,” said Norris, a junior.

Bigford is a senior.

“To make it to state my senior year meant a lot to me,” Bigford said. “If I can make it through qualifying and get to match play, that’d be fine with me. The key for me is to not get frustrated, pick up my spares and make all my shots count.”

“Robert is a really good bowler and I expect him to do well at state,” Norris said. “He just needs to keep his temper under control. Staying positive is important for any bowler.”

Bigford concurred.

“Bowling is 80 percent mind and 20 percent skill,” Bigford said. “I just need to put the last shot behind me. If it’s a bad shot, you just move on to the next one.

“I’m happy for James, too. He deserved to make state. He had an amazing season.”
