Shelbie Letzer scored two goals and assisted another to lead Copperas Cove to a 4-0 blanking of host Ellison on Tuesday.
“If we could have played like this all season we’d have made the playoffs,” said Letzer, a senior. “On the bright side of things, we have been playing well lately.”
Cove upped its District 8-5A record to 5-8.
The Lady Bulldawgs and Ellison were tied 0-0 at halftime. In the 41st minute of play, Letzer was awarded a penalty kick.
“The last time I took a PK was in the first half of district play against Ellison,” Letzer said. “In that game, I kicked to my right so this time I decided to kick it to my left.”
The ball went directly into the net.
“After that, I was excited,” Letzer said. “I knew we’d get rolling.”
In the 56th minute, Letzer took a smooth feed from Courtney Everette and booted home an 18-yarder.
“It was a beautiful pass I got and I kicked it with my left foot,” said the right-footed Letzer.
In the 71st minute, Letzer lofted a perfect pass from the 50-yard line over the Ellison defense and right onto the foot of teammate Amanda Arrisola who dribbled into close range and scored. Arrisola scored again with under two minutes to play off an Ali McBride assist.
Tonight, Cove’s season and Letzer’s high school career will end.
“It’s a bittersweet moment,” said Letzer, Cove’s all-time assists leader. “But hopefully us seniors will pull through and help lead us to a win. We’re 5-and-8. I want to be 6-and-8.”
