KUNDUZ PROVINCE, Afghanistan - U.S. and German coalition forces from Regional Command-North attempted recovery of a downed unmanned aerial vehicle Dec. 20, after it failed unexpectedly over a remote area north of Kunduz.

Two German CH-53 helicopters and one U.S. Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter from the 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, flew to the scene to accurately assess the damage done to the unmanned aerial vehicle and attempt a recovery operation to salvage the sensitive coalition aircraft.

Pfc. Ryan Powell, 20, a Chinook mechanic, said he was anxious about his first mission, but he was also looking forward to working with German soldiers for the first time.

"Working together with the Germans is just like working with anybody else," Powell said. "We're both just here to do a job and the interactions we have are good."

Powell, with Bravo Company, 404th Aviation Support Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment, along with more than a half-dozen Bravo Company soldiers and German soldiers with 1st Task Force, as well as a German safety officer, worked for more than five hours attempting to repair and prepare the downed vehicle for airlift to a nearby coalition location.
