BELTON - Fort Hood and Bell County Sheriff's Office officials are in discussions to transfer Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the man accused of killing 13 and wounding 32 others during a Nov. 5 shooting at Fort Hood, from Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio to Bell County Jail.

According to a press release sent by Sheriff Dan Smith of the Bell County Sheriff's Office, Fort Hood officials asked the office to consider housing Hasan. Bell County jail facilities are the defacto confinement facilities for Fort Hood.

"I can confirm that for the past several weeks, my office has been in discussions with the Fort Hood Judge Advocate General's Office and representatives of the commanding general's office with regard to this request. It will be logistically necessary for Hasan to be near Fort Hood for the prosecution of his case," the release stated.

Smith added that he was not prepared to discuss details of the discussions, but would release an additional statement should they come to an agreement to house Hasan.

Hasan's attorney, John Galligan, said that he was pleased that Hasan could be closer to his defense team, but doesn't think it is necessary to confine him.

"He still has serious medical issues. They are problematic for anyone in a jail environment," Galligan said.

Hasan, who was shot by Fort Hood civilian police officers Nov. 5, is paralyzed from the chest down. "He's not a flight risk. Where is the threat?" Galligan said.

Hasan would be kept in the infirmary in the jail, which would have to be modified to hold him, Galligan said.

Fort Hood officials said they are in discussion with Bell County Jail, but nothing has been decided yet. They are just seeing what their options are, said Capt. Isaac Taylor with the III Corps Public Affairs Office.

Fort Hood recently granted a defense request to delay the start of Hasan's Article 32 proceedings until June 1. The hearings were originally scheduled to begin March 1
