Maj. Gen. Anthony R. Ierardi, head of Army Force Management, will command the 1st Cavalry Division, the Pentagon announced last week.

Ierardi was selected by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond T. Odierno to replace Maj. Gen. Daniel B. Allyn, current division commander.

Allyn, who is deployed to Afghanistan with the 1st Cavalry's Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, was nominated for appointment to lieutenant general and command of the 18th Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, N.C., on Jan. 19 by President Barack Obama.

"It is an honor to be able to serve with the tremendous soldiers and families of the 1st Cavalry Division," Ierardi said in an emailed statement. "My family and I are truly excited to return to the wonderful Fort Hood community that does so much to support our troops."

Ierardi said he planned to arrive in Texas in June.

Prior to working at force management in Washington, D.C., Ierardi served as the executive officer for the Defense Department's Counter-Improvised Explosive Device Senior Integration Group.

Ierardi's past Fort Hood assignments include two stints with the 1st Cavalry: division operations officer and commander of the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade.

He also served as the chief of staff for the 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Red Cloud, Korea, and as commander of the 2nd Infantry Division's 1st Brigade at Camp Casey, Korea.Allyn called Ierardi "a proven combat leader of great experience who is fully ready for the incredible privilege of leading 1st Cavalry Division forward in support of our nation's future missions" in an email.

As for his own nomination and assignment, Allyn said he was "extremely humbled and honored," but kept the focus on his current mission.

"America's 'First Team' has important work ahead of us here in Regional Command East (in Afghanistan), and our great cavalry leaders and troopers are laser-focused on finishing our mission with 'cav' toughness and strength of purpose."
