A one-car rollover in Killeen killed a Fort Hood soldier and sent another man to the hospital Saturday night.

Killeen emergency officials received a call at 7:03 p.m. in reference to the rollover, said Killeen Police Department spokeswoman Carroll Smith.

Witnesses said the blue Ford Focus was weaving recklessly in and out of traffic while heading north on Twin Creek Drive when the vehicle left the road and hit a phone box on elevated ground. The driver, Spc. John Yasko, 20, of Leesburg, Fla., and a passenger were thrown from the car, which continued through a fence before landing in the front yard of a home in the 4300 block of Creekside Drive, Smith said.

The name of the passenger was not released.

The vehicle landed right side up with the driver trapped underneath, Smith said.

Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced Yasko, who was assigned to the 553rd Combat Support Battalion, 13th Sustainment Command, dead at 7:47 p.m.

The 21-year-old passenger was ejected a few feet from where the vehicle landed and was taken by ambulance to Darnall Army Medical Center on Fort Hood with what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, Smith said.

Yasko’s military decorations include the Korean Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon.
