Veterans and service members across Texas will soon have easier access to finding out how their military training translates to college credit.
The Central Texas College Board of Trustees voted unanimously Thursday to award a $542,280 contract to a Virginia-based technology consulting firm hired to assist the college in developing a website for members and former members of the military looking to re-enter the classroom.
"It will be an easy way to show them exactly where they stand in terms of their education," said John Hunt, CTC's deputy chancellor - Texas campus operations and distance learning.
The website will allow current and former military service members to maximize the amount of credit-hours they can receive based on their training and experience while serving.
"They will be able to go to the website, enter their information, and receive a transcript to show them what classes they have credit for," said Michele Carter, CTC's director of business services and contracting officer.
The funds to create the program come from a $1 million grant from the Texas Workforce Commission as part of a Texas College Credit for Heroes initiative, which was signed into law by Gov. Rick Perry in July.
Once the website is complete, it will be available to any service member or veteran who wishes to attend college in the state. The remainder of the grant money will be used to hire personnel, buy equipment and for other costs associated with building and maintaining the site.
"It's a new venture for (CTC)," said James Anderson, the college's chancellor.
Carter said the website must be complete for a trial launch by Dec. 31, and will launch officially on March 31, 2012.
