FORWARD OPERATING BASE MAREZ, MOSUL, Iraq - Sgt. 1st Class Martin Flores, a career counselor with 3rd "Greywolf" Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, was awarded the Army Physical Fitness Award June 23.

At 39 years old, Flores scored 298 points on his physical training test earlier that day, 28 points more than the minimum requirement for the award.

Flores, a native of El Paso, was a recruiter for the El Paso Recruiting Company, Phoenix Recruiting Battalion, 5th Recruiting Brigade, before he was attached to the Greywolf Brigade in Mosul, Iraq five months ago.

Sit-ups, push-ups and jogging may prepare your muscles, but a healthy diet will bring you across the finish line, Flores said.

"Exercise is useless if you don't have a good diet," he said.

Flores said that he tells his soldiers to have a physical training goal to stick to in order to maintain their physical health.

"I am a strong believer in maintaining the basics," he said.
