Exciting new changes are underway at Fort Hood’s largest gym, Abrams Physical Fitness Center.
Built in 1975, the 64,000-square-foot building was last renovated in the late 1990s for about $2 million.
“It was time,” said Brian Dosa, director of Fort Hood’s Directorate of Public Works.
The new renovations will be worth $4.5 million, with the contract finalized in October.
“The gym features two full-size basketball courts, four racquetball courts, multiple workout and weight rooms and an indoor pool,” said Michelle Lenis, chief of the design branch of the Directorate of Public Works.
Lenis said many of the renovations will not be obvious, as much of the change will take place internally.
All building systems will be updated, including the plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting.
“They will be modernized for more energy efficiency, to reduce the impact on the environment,” Lenis said.
Conservation is one of the primary goals of Fort Hood and the renovation, Lenis said.
Like many newer structures on post, the Abrams pool will have a solar thermal system installed on its roof, Dosa said. This will allow solar power to heat the pool, cutting down on energy waste. In addition, the pool will undergo a system change, from a full chemical chlorine system to an ultraviolet sanitation system, which will minimize the use of chemicals. An anti-slip deck will also be added.
Upon completion in fall 2014, visitors will see a full restoration of all the gym’s courts, as well as the atrium, which will be opened up to provide greater access to staff.
“The floor plan primarily stays the same, but some areas have been consolidated,” Lenis said. “Abandoned equipment has been removed, so we gained a bit of usable space.”
The bathrooms will also be redone, bringing the fitness center into full Americans with Disabilities Act compliance.
Abrams is the seventh of Fort Hood’s nine gyms to be renovated in recent years, Dosa said.
Still to come are Applied Fitness Center and Ironhorse Fitness Center, both of which are transitioning to Functional Fitness Centers.
