Brig. Gen. Michael Bills will take command of the 1st Cavalry Division, the Defense Department announced Thursday.
Bills is currently the acting senior commander of the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo.
“Brig. Gen. Michael Bills is an outstanding soldier and leader. With his extensive operational background, knowledge and experience, he is absolutely the right general officer to lead the 1st Cavalry Division,” said Maj. Gen. Anthony Ierardi, current division commander. “As America’s First Team continues to do our nation’s bidding to accomplish all assigned missions, I am grateful that such an accomplished professional will command these terrific soldiers and care for their families here at Fort Hood and wherever they are deployed.”
The change of command is expected to occur in March, division officials said. Ierardi’s future position in the Army has not been announced. He has served as commander of the First Team since June 2012.
Bills is no stranger to Fort Hood. He served as the 72nd colonel of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment from 2006 to 2009. He commissioned as an armor officer in 1983 after graduating from George Mason University, and also has served with U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army, Germany, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kan., and 1st Armored Division. Bills will lead the division’s headquarters on its second deployment to Afghanistan later this year.
Two other Fort Hood general officer transitions were announced last week:
Maj. Gen. James M. Richardson, deputy commander of III Corps, will move to Redstone Arsenal, Ala., to be commander of U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command.
Brig. Gen. Joseph M. Martin, deputy commander of maneuver for 1st Cavalry Division, will become deputy commander of U.S. Army Combined Arms Center, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
