First Army Division West welcomed a new senior enlisted leader in a change of responsibility ceremony July 30 at Cameron Field near Division West headquarters.

Command Sgt. Maj. Steven B. Brown took over the responsibilities of Division West from Command Sgt. Maj. Ronald E. Orosz.

“It was my honor to serve with all of you and I wish you the best in the future,” Orosz said. “Command Sgt. Maj. Brown is more than capable of handling the duties.”

Brown’s most recent assignment was as command sergeant major of Division West’s 479th Field Artillery Brigade.

The ceremony bid farewell to Orosz and his wife, Sue, who joined the Division West family in October 2011.

“Fort Hood is a great place to serve,” Orosz said. “When I left the ‘Great Place’ in 2009, I bragged about Fort Hood on many occasions and I’m sure I’ll brag again.”

Orosz will move on to become the command sergeant major of the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.

Maj. Gen. Warren E. Phipps Jr., commander of First Army Division West, presided over the ceremony and had great things to say about his friend and colleague, Orosz.

“Today I have the distinguished honor to host this ceremony and highlight the significance of our standard-bearer,” Phipps said. “Command Sgt. Maj. Orosz has been instrumental to the division and has truly lived up to the moniker of the NCO Corps as being the backbone of Division West.

“He has been a valued member of the Division West command team for nearly two years and he’s been my steadfast battle-buddy and most trusted confidant,” Phipps said.

Phipps also took the time to talk about his new division senior noncommissioned officer.

“We enjoy incredibly fortunate timing in having a familiar face in Command Sgt. Maj. Brown as he steps up to temporarily man the helm,” Phipps said. “A little more than a week has gone by since Command Sgt. Maj. Brown handed off his own sword of the 479th Field Artillery Brigade. I gladly welcome Command Sgt. Maj. Brown.”

Division West, a subordinate unit of First Army, trains and validates Army National Guard and Reserve soldiers for deployment to combat and other contingency operations.

The division also trains units of the active Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marine Corps and United States partner nations, for a total of nearly 40,000 service members every year.

Division West’s eight subordinate training brigades are the 120th Infantry, 479th Field Artillery and 166th Aviation Brigades at Fort Hood; the 181st Infantry at Fort McCoy, Wis.; the 189th and 191st Infantry Brigades at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.; and the 402nd and 5th Armored Brigades at Fort Bliss.
