Have a green Christmas this year by recycling everything from trees and holiday lights to wrapping paper, gift boxes and bags.

The Fort Hood Recycle Center and Keep Killeen Beautiful are partnering together to offer the community a green way to take down their Christmas trees and get rid of that pile of burned-out holiday lights.

Community members can bring their trees and holiday lights to the Fort Hood Recycle Center from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays from Thursday to Jan. 3. All ornaments, tinsel, lights, tree stands and any other decorations must be removed from the tree prior to recycling.

“In partnership with Keep Killeen Beautiful, this is the first year Fort Hood will be offering Christmas tree recycling,” said Pollyanna Reedy, Fort Hood recycling assistant business manager. “It is a convenient service we feel is needed in our community.”

The trees collected at Fort Hood’s recycle center will be taken to Keep Killeen Beautiful’s event that will also offer Christmas tree recycling services from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 4 at the Killeen Special Events Center. Participants will be greeted by Keep Killeen Beautiful, Killeen’s Youth Advisory Commission and local Starbucks volunteers who will help unload trees. Early birds at Killeen’s event will receive a free tree sapling.

“The parks department will be on site at the Killeen Special Events Center with their equipment to mulch the trees we collect from the community and Fort Hood,” said Colen Wilson, chairman of Keep Killeen Beautiful. “This partnership with Fort Hood will help us to expand a closed-loop system in our community and divert trees from ... the landfill.”

Fort Hood’s and Killeen’s recycling events are open to the public. The community is invited to pick up a free bag of mulch Jan. 4. Leftover mulch will be used in local parks.
