A new kind of sandwich is coming to Fort Hood next month.
Army & Air Force Exchange Service is trading in its in-house brand for the popular Subway fast food chain.
The new store will replace the Spec T’s — a combination of Anthony’s Pizza and Robin Hood Sandwich Shoppe — inside the TJ Mills Food Court.
“We are trying to reposition with more recognizable name-brand food concepts,” said Ted Pennington, food business manager for Fort Hood Exchange. “We’ve had a lot of soldiers ask about Subway and a healthier choice menu.”
The facility where Subway is opening is already the most popular on post, said Thaise Jennings, TJ Mills Food Court manager. There are five other food options in the food court ranging from burgers to wings to seafood, as well as a kid’s play area.
“We are No. 1 as far as sales, size and customer traffic,” she said.
The Subway will be owned by the exchange and offer the same deals and menu items as those off post, she said. The grand opening will be March 12, and the exchange is planning an opening event, Jennings said.
The exchange is also researching adding food to the 19th Street Express.
“There’s a big push for healthy options and stuff not already on Fort Hood. We’re looking at new name brands,” Pennington said.
