Gray Eagle unmanned aircraft systems await maintenance Aug. 12 in the recently opened Fort Hood Unmanned Aircraft System Maintenance Hangar at Robert Gray Army Airfield. The hangar was built to provide more space for the UAS and the soldiers responsible for piloting and maintaining them. It also features three maintenance shops, two tool rooms and a technical supply area. The hangar easily houses six fully-assembled Gray Eagles on each side, with a taxiway down the middle to provide convenient maneuvering in and out of the hangar. Fort Hood soldiers began moving into a first of its kind hangar this summer.

With enough space for two football fields inside, the unmanned aerial system hangar is open for business. Fox and Echo, the two Gray Eagle UAS companies within 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, will utilize the space.

The $22 million unmanned aerial system complex was built at West Fort Hood’s Robert Gray Army Airfield.

Aside from the large hangar to house the 56-foot wingspan Gray Eagles, a 14,900-square-foot administrative building and a motor pool also were funded in the budget, according to public works officials. These facilities are expected to be completed next year.

The project also widened Mohawk Road from two to four lanes in one section.

The Gray Eagle system conducts reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition, as well as attack operations.
