HARKER HEIGHTS — Veterans in the immediate area of Fort Hood will no longer have to drive to the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in Temple for medical care soon, according to a Monday announcement from the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System.

The Department of Veterans Affairs opened solicitation bids for a contractor to open medical clinics in Killeen and Copperas Cove for up to 7,200 veterans at each location, with the ability to grow to accommodate more veterans as needed, said Michael Kiefer, the new director of the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System.
