The Killeen chapter of VETSports hosted the second annual “Battle of the Brave” softball event Saturday, pitting teams of veterans, police, and firefighters against one another in a friendly competition.

The three teams played against each other at the Killeen Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon, with the biggest match up between the Killeen Professional Fire Fighters’ Association and the Killeen Police Employee Association.

Although the firefighters won last year, this time the police took both the trophy and bragging rights for the rest of the year.

VETSports is a national organization founded by three wounded warriors that brings veterans together to play team sports and engage in community service.

VETSports has been in the area for three years and includes about 60 active members, said Sarah Elix, who helped organize the softball event with her husband, Jason Elix, Killeen chapter captain and regional coordinator of VETSports.

“We just wanted to kind of get the community more involved and some positive interaction between the departments,” said Sarah. “Anything that we can do to get these veterans out of their home and more involved.”
