Staff Sgt. Michael D. Allen, 29, is an multichannel transmission systems operator for III Corps. He joined the military June 9, 2005, and is deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan, as a facilities manager for the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command.
Favorite thing about the military: “(By going) to different countries, you realize in the next 10 to 15 years, you will be a part of history.”
Thing the Army taught you: “Nothing is as bad as it seems.”
What inspired you to be a soldier?
“The appreciation I receive when I am wearing this uniform.”
Deployments: Four times — to Iraq from 2008 to 2009, currently deployed to Afghanistan and also deployed to the country from 2006 to 2007 and 2010 to 2011.
What’s this deployment been like?
“Very stressful, but (it’s a) new learning experience.”
What do you enjoy most about your deployment and the mission you’re supporting?
“Getting to work with the coalition forces.”
What do you miss most about Fort Hood and your family?
“I miss playing with my kids (Makalya, 12, Adrian, 3, and Brandon, 1) and seeing them smile.”
