FORT HOOD — Shoppers at local commissaries can now download digital coupons instead of clipping them by using the Defense Commissary Agency’s new Commissary Rewards Card.
“By using this card, our customers can access digital coupons and redeem them in any military commissary,” said DeCA Director and CEO Joseph Jeu in a news release this month. “This effort is about leveraging technology to reward our customers for using their commissary.”
The card allows customers to save time and money by clipping and redeeming coupons digitally. Customers who pick up their cards by Tuesday will have coupons preloaded.
Customers must pick up a card in the store and register it on DeCA’s website in order to load digital coupons to their account.
Those who register their cards by Tuesday have the chance to enter in the 2012 Commissary Rewards Card “Home for the Holidays Sweepstakes” sponsored by Dr Pepper-Snapple. The prize includes round-trip airline tickets for four to anywhere in the U.S., hotel accommodations for six days and five nights and $1,000.
Lauren Altizer, who runs Fort Hood Savers, a blog that teaches military families to save and provides information on local discounts, said she hasn’t experienced big savings with the digital coupons.
“It’s very limited,” she said. “Coupons are really low value.”
She hopes the program adds more high value coupons with personalized deals and a rewards system.
“It could be a really neat program, but it’s not quite there yet,” she said. “It’s nice for people who don’t want to clip coupons or do (extreme) couponing.”
