The Fort Hood Officers’ Spouses’ Club kicked off its new year with a Super Sign Up event last week at Club Hood.
Spouses were invited to come together to learn about the club, as well as shop local vendors and get information about local services, said Tracy Curran, spouses’ club president. The sign up event also helped the club gain new members.
“You can join at any time, but this is a one-stop shop,” she said.
The club expected to gain about 200 new members on Aug. 28, and averages about 250 new members each year. Because of moves, there is a high turnover of membership, Curran said.
“A lot of people who come to this are new to the area,” she said. “It’s the perfect way to make friends.”
Last year the spouses’ club donated $250,000 in community outreach to organizations including the USO, the Greater Killeen Free Clinic and local schools.
“I joined for fun and friendship, but also to give back to the community and be a part of it,” said Tiffany Velischka, a military spouse new to Fort Hood.
Sylvia Phipps, an advisor to the club, said she has been a part of spouse clubs across the country for the past 20 years.
“You meet all these wonderful ladies and give back to the community,” she said. “I’m very proud of all the spouses for stepping up and giving back.”
The club’s next fundraiser will be the Holiday Bazaar and spaces for vendors and sponsors are still available.
