Army Cadet Deeaundre S. Smith graduated from the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, ROTC, Leader’s Training Course at Fort Knox, Ky.

Cadets are observed and evaluated during classroom and field training exercises to determine their officer potential in leadership abilities and skills. The cadets are trained to have a sound understanding of traditional leadership values during the challenging, motivating “hands-on” training.

Smith is a student at Bethune-Cookman University, Daytona Beach, Fla. He is the son of Georgetta Smith of Killeen. Smith is a 2011 graduate of Shoemaker High School.

Army Cadet Devin L. Stevenson enrolled in the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, ROTC, Early Commissioning Program.

The two-year accelerated program is for students that meet the criteria to receive associate degrees and be commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army Reserve or Army National Guard. They then must attend and complete their bachelors degrees at a four-year college.

Stevenson will be attending Wentworth Academy, Lexington, Mo. He is the son of Davette and Bernabe Quinones of Killeen, and Steven Stevenson of Harker Heights. Stevenson is a 2013 graduate of Harker Heights High School.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Tayler P. Bryant graduated from the six-month Aerospace Ground Equipment Apprentice Mission Ready Technician Course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls.

Bryant is a F-16 avionics specialist assigned to the 82nd Training Wing at Sheppard Air Force Base. The airman first class has served in the military for less than one year. She is the daughter of Tracey Bryant of Killeen, and Gregory Bryant of San Antonio. Bryant is a 2012 graduate of Stevens High School, San Antonio.

Army Pfc. Darius T. Ford graduated from nine weeks of basic combat training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Ford is the son of Antoine Ford Sr. of Killeen. He is a 2008 graduate of Shoemaker High School.

Navy Seaman Recruit Jasmin Church recently completed the eight-week U.S. Navy basic training program at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Church is the daughter of Sabina Nisic of Harker Heights, and a 2008 graduate of Harker Heights High School.

Air Force Airman Anthony B. Patron graduated from eight weeks of basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Patron is the son of Jean and Carlos Lujan of Fort Hood.

Day 1: On the ground in South Korea with Ironhorse soldiers

After 20 hours of travel, by plane and bus, I finally made it to Camp Casey, South Korea with the remainder of Fort Hood’s 1st Brigade Combat Team soldiers. For the next several days, I will be following the mission and daily lives of Ironhorse troopers as they begin a nine-month rotation in the land of the morning calm.
