SMA Chandler speaks out on suicide, sex assault, offensive tattoos

Sergeant Major of the Army Raymond Chandler ordered noncommissioned officers to step up their game, demanding greater discipline and enforcement of standards in the ranks.

While quick to commend the unprecedented success NCOs have seen over the past decade, Chandler charged them to take an active role to end suicides, the deadliest enemy soldiers face today.

Chandler also let them know he is “pissed off” about sexual harassment and hazing — and said soldiers should be, too.

Professional military education, fitness and vulgar tattoos are in the cross hairs, as well.

Odierno pushes four must-have programs

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno outlined his priorities and perspectives during an exclusive interview with Vago Muradian, the editor of Defense News, a sister publication of Army Times.

Here are excerpts from their talk during the Association of the United States Army’s annual gathering:

One of your priority efforts is to redesign the brigade combat teams. Why is that so necessary, and what are we going to see come out of that process?

What we have learned is, in terms of brigade combat team, we need it to be agile and flexible enough to operate across a broad spectrum of missions.

We have done a significant amount of analysis — both technical analysis and tactical analysis — to come up with a new design.

Army keeps focus on Africa-bound brigade

When soldiers from 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division begin working with U.S. Africa Command next year, the Army will be paying close attention, seeking lessons learned as it prepares to regionally align the rest of the Army with combatant commands around the world.

“We’ll learn some of those lessons and have to adjust as we go forward,” Lt. Gen. John Campbell, the Army deputy chief of staff for operations, said during a panel on regionally aligned forces at the Association of the United States Army’s annual meeting.

“We are an Army in transition, and what that really means is we’ve got to work this out … over time,” he said.
