Senior Chief Petty Officer Terry R. Derks and fellow sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise formed a Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions committee.

The peer-to-peer mentoring program is geared toward assisting sailors in making positive decisions in all areas of their lives. Derks is a 1988 graduate of Mayville High School of Mayville, Mich., and joined the Navy in July 1988.

Derks is the son of Joy McMann of Lampasas, and Norman Derks of Leander.

Navy Seaman Daniel C. Hernandez graduated with honors after completing the U.S. Navy’s eight-week basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Hernandez is a 2007 graduate of Harker Heights High School.

He is the son of Jerry A. and Carolyn J. Hernandez of Harker Heights. His brother is Jason A. Hernandez of Harker Heights.

The following airmen have completed eight weeks of basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio and will earn four credits toward and Associate of Applied Science through the Community College of the Air Force:

Airman 1st Class Joshua Hammons is the son of Cheryl Wilson of Temple. Hammons is a 2010 graduate of Temple High School.

Reserve Airman Joshua G. Ruiz is the son of Grace Ruiz of Killeen. Ruiz is a 2011 graduate of Ellison High School.

Day 1: On the ground in South Korea with Ironhorse soldiers

After 20 hours of travel, by plane and bus, I finally made it to Camp Casey, South Korea with the remainder of Fort Hood’s 1st Brigade Combat Team soldiers. For the next several days, I will be following the mission and daily lives of Ironhorse troopers as they begin a nine-month rotation in the land of the morning calm.
