This whole government shutdown thing is just stupid.

Obamacare, like it or hate it, was voted in by a democratically elected Congress some four years ago.

Seems to me, that before we shut down the government and potentially harm millions of families — including thousands in the Fort Hood area — we should at least give it a shot.

If Obamacare doesn’t work, get rid of it then. Or conform it to be helpful.

But shutting down the government over it?

C’mon. All it does is make people upset.

Folks who can’t shop at the commissary are upset. Folks who can’t camp out at area lakes are upset. Soldiers who have to wait an extra long time for a variety of services are upset. Deployed soldiers who can’t watch NFL games are really upset.

Imagine how the more than 1,100 Fort Hood employees who were sent home with furlough notices felt — especially if they have a family to raise and not a whole lot of extra income.

Congress has reached an all-time low (except perhaps for the Civil War.)

I blame all of them for letting it get this far. It’s craziness on a bipartisan level.

Now, I’m not a liberal. Nor am I a conservative. I’m just a regular American trying to raise a family like millions of others.

Is this a great country? Darn straight.

Could this country be better? You bet.

Will Obamacare destroy the country? Doubtful.

Will a government shutdown destroy the country? I think it could.

Congress needs to act. Fast.

Our leaders need to come up with a way to prevent things like this in the future.

Here’s one I thought of: If members of Congress don’t pass a balanced budget by the deadline, they shall be forever prohibited from running for any state or national office.

That’ll get their dander up.

Letting them know their actions are hurting people or taking away their money doesn’t really bother these guys. Most of them are rich anyway.

But take away their power — or their ability to increase their power — and we’ll see some real improvements in this country.

I even have a name for it: The Real Improvement Act. I’ll even give Congress a carrot under The Real Improvement Act: If senators and representatives fail to pass a budget by deadline, they’ve got 30 days to fix it before their power to run again is removed.

Those 30 days will be spent at Fort Hood.

After all, great things happen at the Great Place.

Jacob Brooks, with all due respect, you're an idiot. When does the government ever scrap a program that doesn't work. The politicians will say, "The only thing that can fix this debacle is the federal government." and they will tinker and tinker until the whole system is a shell of what it once was. In the meantime, thousands if not millions will be sick or die. This next point should really hit home. What happens at the next government shutdown when they control every aspect of your healthcare? Do you think they want have ultimate control over your life when they say, give us what we want or we're shutting down the government and with it, the entire healthcare system? I for one, do not want to allow all of us to go on this government system so we can find out what they will do when they demand more from us. Life, Liberty, and Property are guaranteed to us all. If you conscript doctors, nurses, and surgeons to perform tasks on your behalf, have you not enslaved them? Isn't their labor their property? If you make them work for you, you are stealing their property. Now, I've raised some serious unanswered questions, but you haven't read passed, "You're an idiot." I lost you there and you've tuned this whole thing out. You won't even answer all the questions I've asked.
