Pets and their owners can enjoy numerous outdoor activities Saturday during the Patriot Pet Expo and dog fashion show at the Clear Creek Main Exchange.

DiAnn Salinas, services business tech for Fort Hood Exchange, said it’s a great time of year for families to enjoy an outdoor event with their pets.

“It’ll be really fun,” she said. “Kids love their pets and like to do things with them. Just bring the family.”

Entrance is free, as is participation in a Barking Oaks Pet Agility Course. The course includes jumps, tunnels and shoots and is open to pets and their owners.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” she said. “Customers can participate with their pet in the agility course. Not every store lets people bring their pets into the shopping area.”

Last year, about 150 attended the event and about 12 dogs participated in a pet contest, Salinas said.

This year’s pet fashion show and contest is also free and will accept the first 20 people who sign up. Gift cards will be awarded for the winners in the following categories: most unique-looking pet, best show dog, best costume and cutest.

Fort Hood Pet Adoptions and Lone Star Dog Trainer will also have booths at the event. There will also be a car show, food carts, which include a variety of treats for animals, as well as nail clipping for pets. Vanguard Veterinary Associates will provide microchips for $38 and heartworm tests for $6.

For safety, owners are asked to keep their pets on a leash or in a carrier.

After 20 hours of travel, by plane and bus, I finally made it to Camp Casey, South Korea with the remainder of Fort Hood’s 1st Brigade Combat Team soldiers. For the next several days, I will be following the mission and daily lives of Ironhorse troopers as they begin a nine-month rotation in the land of the morning calm.
