“Basketball Wives LA” star Gloria Govan Barnes is coming to Fort Hood.
On Monday, Govan Barnes will sign copies of her book, “A Mixed Girl’s Favorite Recipes,” featuring more than 80 recipes for busy families who enjoy culinary variety.
Both she and her husband, Los Angeles Clippers player Matt Barnes, come from multi-cultural backgrounds. Govan Barnes is Mexican and African-American, and Barnes is Italian and African-American. Govan Barnes wrote the book along with her sister-in-law, Marlena Attinasi, Barnes’ sister.
Govan Barnes called into DeAnna Shields’ online radio show “Say it with Dee” on Feb. 19 to talk about her upcoming visit to Killeen.
“The book is so rich in culture ... Mexican, Italian and soul food. There’s something in there (for everyone),” Govan Barnes said.
Along with her visit to Fort Hood, Govan Barnes on Sunday will stop by the grand opening of AllureXperience Hair and Barber Studio, a local salon owned by an active-duty soldier.
At the salon, the hair and makeup team will style Govan Barnes, along with attendees.
“I’m excited to bring some pampering to the women. I want to give them that opportunity, especially women with kids,” Govan Barnes said. “I’m extremely honored to be able to meet these women and talk to them about their experiences.”
This will be her first visit to Fort Hood. “I’m so honored. I feel the love already.”
Govan Barnes believes her recipes are ideal for military families, with soldiers and spouses always on the go.
“(The book) offers healthy alternatives. As a mom, I try to put my understanding in meal preparation and knowing moms have a busy schedule,” she said. “I give people quick tips on snacks and easy kid foods.”
Fans are welcome to visit with Govan Barnes at the salon from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at 1600 W. Stan Schlueter Loop, and on post from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the Clear Creek Main Exchange.
“I’m excited to be out there,” Govan Barnes said.
