The long-running Fort Hood Oktoberfest takes place Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Sportsmen’s Pavilion.

“We are expecting between 5,000 and 6,000 people to attend,” said Norma Hernandez, special events coordinator for Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

With many military families having spent time in Germany, Oktoberfest is a nice way to reconnect and share the culture of a country that still houses a number of Army posts.

For families

The family-friendly fun will include a cakewalk, pet adoptions, sumo-suit wrestling, crafts and face painting, a pumpkin patch and inflatable bounce houses for the kids.

A strongman competition will require all who enter to hold a beer stein filled with water at arm’s length for as long as physically possible. And aspiring singers can compete in a yodeling competition.

The 1st Cavalry Division Band will perform live sets in between a DJ spinning German music tracks and popular line dances.

Various vendors and family readiness groups will sell food, including Deutsch specialties such as schnitzel, bratwurst and pretzels.

Lots on tap

But the thing that comes to mind first with Oktoberfest is beer.

This festival will have plenty of it on tap, including German favorite Krombacher, and German-inspired American brews like Widmer Hefeweizen and Samuel Adams’ seasonal Oktoberfest. For those who don’t want to stray too far out of their comfort zone, they will also serve American classics Coors and Bud Light.

There will be plenty of seating and shade, Hernandez said. Whether or not you’ve had the pleasure of enjoying the real festival in Munich, the Sportsmen’s Pavilion is the next best thing, sure to be the event of fall at Fort Hood.
