Movie Matinee: Watch “The Lion King” in Room 156 at the Casey Memorial Library from 2 to 4 p.m. Popcorn and a beverage are provided.


The Book Club: Group meets from 6 to 7 p.m. at a library study table in the Casey Memorial Library to discuss “BackRoads” by Tawni O’Dell. Copies of the book are available at the reference desk. Call 254-287-2716.


Adoption Day: The Fort Hood Stray Facility will host an adoption day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Aug. 22

Make and Take Craft Night: Learn to make a duck tape flower pen from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Casey Memorial Library’s children’s room. For ages 8 and older.

Aug. 23

Preschool Story Time: Enjoy stories, songs and a craft on a weekly theme from 10 to 11 a.m at Room 156 of Casey Memorial Library annex. Day cares and homeschoolers are welcome.

Rip the Runway Back 2 School Bash: Join Child, Youth & School Services in kicking-off the new school year with style from 2 to 6 p.m. at Montague Youth Center, Building 70020 on Clement Drive at West Fort Hood. Enjoy activities and cool prizes at this free event, open to all youth in sixth through 12th grades. Call 254-553-7661 or 254-553-7662.

School Age Care Back 2 School Bash: Enjoy fun activities and tools to help prepare for the new school year at Walker School Age Care is located at Building 85018, Warrior Way. Open to youth in first through fifth grades registered with Child, Youth & School Services. Call your school age care site.

Hawaiian Luau & Pool Party: A spectacular island attraction comes to Central Texas from 8:30 to 11 p.m. at Legends Pub, Building 5764, 24th Street and Tank Destroyer Boulevard, next to Club Hood. Enjoy authentic island food, music, Polynesian dancers, fire performance and interactive pool games; all included in the $5 cover charge. Feast on island favorites such as kalua pig, shoyu chicken, lumpia, rice, macaroni salad, haupia, coconut cake and a tropical fruit display. Science Saturday: Come learn about the color wheel and mix your own colors with frosting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the children’s room at the Casey Memorial Library.

Sept. 6

USO Yellow Ribbon Gala: Tickets are now on sale at http://usoforthoodyellowribbongala.eventbrite.com/. Tickets are $50 and all proceeds stay at Fort Hood. The gala begins at 7 p.m. at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center and features singer Tony Orlando and the 10-piece show band, Matchmaker. Sponsorships and space in the silent auction are still available. Call the USO Fort Hood at 254-768-2770.

Day 1: On the ground in South Korea with Ironhorse soldiers

After 20 hours of travel, by plane and bus, I finally made it to Camp Casey, South Korea with the remainder of Fort Hood’s 1st Brigade Combat Team soldiers. For the next several days, I will be following the mission and daily lives of Ironhorse troopers as they begin a nine-month rotation in the land of the morning calm.
