Thursday Music Mix: From 3 to 8 p.m. enjoy pool, shuffleboard, popcorn and finger foods on the covered patio as you listen to a live DJ. The event is free and open to all 18 and older. Backbone NCO Lounge is inside Phantom Warrior Center, Building 194 on 37th Street. Call (254) 532-5073.

Meet and greet: To kick off the annual Caribbean Afr’am Festival, the Clear Creek Main Exchange is hosting a meet and greet with the Reggae performers headlining the festival. Stop by from 5 to 9 p.m. to meet Mykal “Grammy” Rose along with Tasha, Mr. Perfect, Menny and Mr. Easy.

Fight night: Catch the UFC Featherweight Championship bout between Featherweight super star Jose Aldo and top contender Chan Sung Jung at Legends Pub, Building 5764 at 24th Street and Tank Destroyer Boulevard, next to Club Hood. National Night Out: Fort Hood residents, come meet your neighbors and celebrate the year’s largest stand against crime from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hood Stadium. Aug. 8

Hood Howdy: Fort Hood’s bi-annual event — a newcomers information and mini career fair — is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Club Hood, Building 5764 at 24th Street at Tank Destroyer Boulevard. Meet area chambers of commerce, more than 100 area businesses and agencies, and enjoy door prizes and refreshments. Check out the FMWR room for a chance to win an iPod Touch. Aug. 8

Punt, Pass and Kick Competition: Fort Hood Family Housing and Youth Sports and Fitness host the free NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Competition, a program of Fuel up to Play 60, from 9 a.m. to noon at Hood Stadium. Boys and girls ages 6 to 15, come out and put your skills to the test as you compete to take your game to the next level. Who knows, you could advance to be in the National PPK Champion. 2013 U.S. Army Soldier Show: “Ready and Resilient: At Your Service” makes a two-day stop at Fort Hood with the music and dance you know and love. Catch it all live on stage at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Aug. 9 and at 2 and 7 p.m. Aug. 10 at Palmer Theater, Building 334 at 31st Street and 761st Tank Battalion Avenue. This year’s production explores what it means to be ready and resilient in today’s Army as a soldier, spouse, family member, survivor, retiree and civilian. For this 30th anniversary show, the 75-minute song and dance performance will showcase patriotic themes and popular musical numbers. The soldier show is free and open to the public, with seats available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Call (254) 288-7835.

Day 1: On the ground in South Korea with Ironhorse soldiers

After 20 hours of travel, by plane and bus, I finally made it to Camp Casey, South Korea with the remainder of Fort Hood’s 1st Brigade Combat Team soldiers. For the next several days, I will be following the mission and daily lives of Ironhorse troopers as they begin a nine-month rotation in the land of the morning calm.
