Summer reading: The Casey Memorial Library has an online reading program for adults, teens and children. Those who read 10 books or three hours and log their reading online will earn a prize. Register at usarmy.evanced.info/casey/sr/homepage.asp.


Hood Howdy: A newcomers information and mini-career fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Club Hood, Building 5764 on 24th Street at Tank Destroyer Boulevard. Participants will have the chance to win a cruise for two. Hood Howdy is a family-friendly event, full of information to get to know your new hometown and neighbors, over 100 area businesses and agencies, door prizes and refreshments. Thursday Music Mix: From 3 to 8 p.m., enjoy pool, shuffleboard, popcorn and finger foods on covered patio decks and listen to a live DJ at Backbone NCO Lounge, Building 194 on 37th Street. The event is free and open to ages 18 and older. Call 254-532-5073.

Day 1: On the ground in South Korea with Ironhorse soldiers

After 20 hours of travel, by plane and bus, I finally made it to Camp Casey, South Korea with the remainder of Fort Hood’s 1st Brigade Combat Team soldiers. For the next several days, I will be following the mission and daily lives of Ironhorse troopers as they begin a nine-month rotation in the land of the morning calm.
